In the 1920s the German scientist Emanuel Goldberg of Zeiss Ikon, Dresden, invented the Kinamo and pioneered electronic retrieval technology and library automation.

Emanuel Goldberg was born 31 August 1881 in Moscow, into a Russian Jewish family. He was educated in the cultured, cosmopolitan world of the upper middle classes in late 19th century Moscow. Goldberg decided to enroll at University of Moscow to study Chemistry. He was an exceptional student and collaborated in research in electrochemical reactions with Alexander Speranskii, a faculty member, who specialized in physical chemistry. In 1903 Goldberg received his first patent at the age of 24.

In April, 1906, Goldberg finished his Ph.D. at the University of Leipzig, awarded with highest honors, summa cum laude. After a year as assistant to Adolf Miethe in the Photochemistry Laboratory at the Technical University in Charlottenburg, Berlin, he became head of the photographic department of the Royal Academy of Graphic Arts and Bookcraft, in Leipzig from 1907 to 1917.

In 1917 Goldberg was recruited by the Carl Zeiss firm to become the director of its photographic products subsidiary ICA (Internationale Camera Aktien Gesellschaft) in Dresden.

Here he introduced the breakthrough, spring-driven Kinamo portable movie camera. Kinamo forever changed how film, especially documentary movies, were created.

In 1926 four leading photographic firms formed Zeiss Ikon under Goldberg’s leadership.   He was leading manager of the company until he was kidnapped by the Nazis in 1933. After three days of uncertain confinement, he was released because of his international reputation, and fled afterwards to Czechoslovakia, Italy and at last to Paris. After four years working for Zeiss subsidiaries in France, Goldberg moved to Palestine in 1937. There he established a laboratory, Goldberg Instruments, which became the Electro-Optical Industries (“El-Op”) in Rehovot where he continued his innovation work.

Goldberg retired in 1960 but continued his research and died in Tel Aviv on 13 September 1970.

The documentary will unfold an extraordinary as well as deeply moving biography. But it is more – it is the story of the rediscovery, with a certain sense of satisfaction, of an almost forgotten twentieth century genius whose innovations continue to influence the world today.  The documentary (90 min, HD) will elaborate Goldberg’s story in a humane and almost poetic way showing the universality of his extraordinary life. This film will entertain and touch everyone interested in destiny and personal strength, optimism and commitment to do exceptional work, creating true benefits for all that change the world for the better.

The Documentary

This man and his work have to be remembered.

His work has been influential as well as path breaking. He was dealing with an upheaval in media and art like we experience today. Thus, the film will introduce to us an extraordinary person and his fate; but also discover what we today can learn from his inventions and his way of dealing with the media change in a progressive way. His family, letters and films will give an idea of a very intelligent and also special person; other material will embed his personal achievement and engagement by being an immigrant in a bigger understanding of time and circumstances.
